Speak Out!

The important thing to remember is that men can help stop violence against women by educating and raising awareness in other men.

Here are some ways to spread the message amongst your peers:

  • Vocalise your opposition to violence against women.
  • Emphasise that women are your equal and should be respected.
  • Emphasise that both men and women must work together to end gender-based violence.
  • Teach young boys and young men that women should be treated with love, civility and respect.
  • Speak out every chance you get.
  • Lead by example.

This is by no means an exhaustive list of how you can spread the message but it is that all-important starting point that will help to bring an end to violence against women.

Men should treat women in the same way they should treat any other member of society – with courtesy and as human beings and individuals with the right to live life free of violence.

Tony Porters Call to Men!

At TEDWomen, Tony Porter makes a call to men everywhere. Telling powerful stories from his own life, he shows how this mentality, drummed into so many men and boys, can lead men to disrespect, mistreat and abuse women and each other. His solution: Break free of the 'man box'.
